The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) initiative at UAF in 2019-2020 centered on counseling Elementary and Secondary students on a one to one basis as needed, as well as overall student growth and development through interactive class meetings. Our program centered on the 5 competencies of SEL: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making. We also introduced staff to the concept of Responsive Teaching, specifically Positive Teacher Language.
We intend to continue this professional development with staff and to have our community incorporate the tenets of Responsive Teaching as part of the UAF school philosophy. The essence of these tenets include teachers supporting student’s individual needs through careful observation, and helping them to achieve their learning goals.
